The Government of Karnataka (GoK) has approved the Manki Port-cum-Shipyard Project and the Kundapura Greenfield Shipyard Project.
Manki Port-cum-shipyard project: The project involves the development of an integrated multipurpose port and shipyard at Manki village in Honnavar taluka of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, at an estimated cost of Rs 69.25 billion. The project will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis with a concession period of 45 years. It will be implemented in two phases, with Phase I involving the development of a 15 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) all-weather, deep-water multipurpose port at an estimated cost of Rs 45.05 billion, capable of accommodating Capesize vessels of up to 180,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT). The port will handle thermal coal, coking coal, iron ore, limestone, fertilisers, petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL), containers and steel products, serving the hinterland of Karnataka, Goa, southern Maharashtra and parts of Telangana. Phase II will provide flexibility for either expansion of the port’s cargo-handling capacity or development of a commercial shipyard with an annual production capacity of 0.3-0.5 million gross tonnes for bulk carriers, tankers and specialised vessels.
Kundapura Greenfield Shipyard Project: The project involves the development of a greenfield commercial shipbuilding facility at Gangolli Beach in Kundapura, Udupi district, Karnataka, at an estimated cost of Rs 3.22 billion. The project will be implemented under the PPP model on a DBFOT basis. The proposed shipyard will have an annual production capacity of three Handysize vessels, each with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) capacity of up to 55,000 tonnes. The facility is projected to cater to approximately 10-15 per cent of shipbuilding demand along India’s western coast and aims to strengthen domestic commercial shipbuilding capabilities and maritime infrastructure.
