The Ministry of Mines has reserved 10,277.1 hectares (102.77 sq. km) offshore for dredging. IIT Madras a detailed study, including borehole testing, and confirmed that the sand is suitable for reclamation.
Vadhvan Port Project Ltd (VPPL) is developing a deep-draft greenfield port in Palghar District, Maharashtra, on 1,448 hectares of reclaimed land. The project requires 200 million cubic meters (CuM) of sand, which will be dredged from a site 60 km away from the port and 50 km off the coast of Daman.
